Dokuji Nami Katana (Sanmai)

The Dokuji Nami Sanmai Katana from Thaitsuki is a unique piece that appears seamless due to its tsuka and saya that are deep blue in color. This katana features a hand forged triple steel shinogi zukuri (yokote and shinogi close to the back edge) blade. Clay tempered and water quenched, the softer 1060 high carbo steel is folded to 1024 layers for the body and reaches a hardness of 35 HRC while the edge uses 1095 high carbon steel, giving it a hardness of 60 HRC. This differential heat treatment process also results in a prominent notare hamon that adds to the overall aesthetics of the sword. This blade also has a bohi that helps to decrease its overall weight, improves its point of balance, and amplifies the wind sound (tachikaze).

This katana is equipped with high quality fittings such as the maru gata (round) tsuba and brass fuchi kashira with nami (wave) motifs that are traditionally blackened. In line with the design is the silver menuki featuring fishes.

With the blade's tang secured to the rikko (hourglass) tsuka with two mekugi, the handle is first covered with genuine same in its natural color. This is held in place deep blue silk tsuka ito wrapped using the hinerimaki technique, providing a firm and comfortable grip.

Completing the katana is the glossy dark blue saya fitted with buffalo horn koiguchi, kurigata, kojiri, along with dark blue silk sageo from Japan.
