Furu Shishi Katana (Sanmai)

Thaitsuki's Furui Shishi Sanmai Katana is the epitome of elegance, with the subtle colors of black and brown. The hand forged and folded (1024 layers) high carbon steel shinogi zukuri blade has a sanmai structure, with the softer 1060 high carbon steel used for the body while 1095 steel is used for the edge. After the clay tempering and water quenching process, it results in a blade with an edge hardness of 60 HRC while the body is at 35 HRC. This differential hardening process results in a blade with a striking notare hamon. Meanwhile, the bohi helps to decrease the overall weight of the sword, improve its point of balance, and amplifies the tachikaze.

This katana is equipped with a simple but sturdy copper mokko gata (lobed) tsuba, silver seppa, and habaki. The brass fuchi kashira and silver menuki have a shishi motif, guardian lions that are also known as komainu or foo dogs. These protectors symbolize strength, courage, and are believed to bring prosperity and success.

The blade's tang is secured to the rikko (hourglass) tsuka with two mekugi. To provide the katana wielder with a firm and comfortable grip, the wooden handle is first covered with genuine black same and the tight hinerimaki uses dark brown silk Tsuka Ito. Completing the katana is the matte dark brown saya fitted with silver koiguchi, kurigata, and kojiri along with a dark brown polyester sageo.
