Hanwei Katana Historical Daimyo Uesugi

This unique, hand-forged katana gets its name from one of the most powerful daimyō of the Senguko period. Son of a successful feudal lord, Uesugi Kenshin proved to be a gifted warrior and political savant. Following the death of his father in battle, Kenshin successfully wrestled control of the Nagao clan from his brother, claiming leadership of both the Nagao and Uesugi clan before the age of 20.

Kenshin became renowned as a powerful strategist — alongside the tying together of an impressive string of military victories, Kenshin introduced commercial and agricultural reforms in his lands. Known as the ‘Dragon of Echigo’, Kenshin has come to be uniquely famed for his administrative expertise and skilful rule, as well as his fierce hand. The likeness of Uesugo Kenshin is carefully embossed on this katana, the latest in our Samaurai series.

The 27 1/4 inch, clay-tempered forged T10 steel blade has been precisely designed to ensure its functional and aesthetic excellence. The katana is true to designs of the Momoyama period, the fuchi elaborately blackened with gold detailing. Despite this, the matte black textured saya brings a subdued touch as true to the necessity of uchigatana as a functional instrument of battle. The design ultimately reflects the nature of Uesugo Kenshin— a bold and skilled warrior but also a thoughtful leader with a strategic mind.
