In Japanese folklore, the Oni is a type of yōkai believed to dwell deep in the mountains or caves. Besides their evil nature, they are also associated with powers such as lightning and thunder. Although modern culture now thinks of the Oni as a protector or guardian, their power and ferocity have not been forgotten.
Based on this belief, Hanwei's Oni Katana is inspired by the Japanese saying "Oni with an Iron Club", translating to one of invincible nature. Naturally, an indomitable blade would be forged from L6 Bainite, a material that is highly challenging to work with, requiring a skilled swordsmith. After heat treatment and clay tempering, this L6 blade is exceptionally tough, durable, and has great impact resistance. For this reason, L6 blades are typically seen only in high end performance swords.
As its name implies, this katana is equipped with a maru gata tsuba depicting a fearsome looking Oni. This motif also carries over to the fuchi, kashira, and menuki. To complement the design of this katana, the 14" tsuka is covered with black same and wrapped tightly with black silk ito. This formidable piece comes with a black lacquered saya with black sageo. Ideal for those looking for a sword with outstanding cutting abilities, Hanwei's Oni Katana is a unique combination of tradition, folklore, and functionality.
