During the historic Third Crusade, initiated by Gregory VIII in 1187, Jerusalem was recaptured by Saladin's Islamic armies. In response, Philip and Richard, along with their armies, embarked on the crusade, arriving at Acre in 1190 after stops at Sicily and Cyprus. They participated in the siege of Acre, which ultimately resulted in the city's surrender in July 1191. Philip returned to France in August, leaving Richard in control. The terms of the surrender included a prisoner exchange and the return of the True Cross by Saladin, which had been captured during the fall of Jerusalem in 1187.
